Neonatal Transport – Does one size fit all?

Patient care extends outside of the hospital walls, with more than 1,800 seriously ill children each year require transportation between specialist centres, with more than half of those being neonates. Their safety and comfort still remains of high important. This can create a challenge when it comes to moving the baby, making sure that all the important equipment fits on the incubator trolleys can be a major problem for some hospitals.

With nearly 30 years’ experience working in the neonatal and paediatric sectors, ParAid Medical has established itself as a leader in the field of bespoke transportation equipment for hospitals and ambulances. Their bespoke Transporter + Incubator Trolley is one of the main item hospitals turn to help solve this problem.

The first stage of this process would be a meeting, where various equipment layouts will be discussed and tried there and then, using state of the art 3D design software, produce the design the customer wants.

The design is then brought back to the ParAid design studio, where it is furnished with equipment mounts and fixings and supporting framework. With the 3D design software, they can create photorealistic renders so the customer can see how the design would look in real life.

Once the customer is happy with the design, the trolley is put through its paces with virtual testing, which is called Finite Element Analysis. This will test various parts/assemblies and overall design to CEN requirements and is simulation crash tested at 10G. This is to make sure that all of ParAid Medical trolleys meet the health and safety requirements of transporting infants when they are critically ill.

Once the trolley has passed all the vigorous testing, the customer will get a final design to make sure that they are happy with the final product. This is then processed, where the manufacturing drawings are prepared to go to manufacture.

ParAid Medical not only design everything in house, but also manufacture everything too, giving them complete control over every aspect of the trolley. This includes inspections and testing before the trolley is sent to the customer. This also allows for any modifications required to the trolley as technology advances to be easily done.

ParAid Medical has been designing and manufacturing for a wide range of customers including St Mary’s Hospital in Manchester. Dr Ian Dady has used these trolleys over 1000 times a year to transport seriously ill infants between specialist centres.
